I am joined today by my OC Charlene to review some Chipmunks songs, specifically covers of other songs. I will do Chipmunks songs, she will do Chipettes, and we will team up if both sing. Here we go!
So What - P!NK (LINK)
Charlene: As a fan of Pink, I have listened to this song a lot! It's one of my favorites! However...
RATING: 6/10
Charlene: It is decent for the Chipettes, and at times Brittany does great vocals, but they absolutely butcher one of the best parts. When the vocals mention 'get in a fight' three times in a row, the last one Pink shouts more than sings. Pink's rendition has a lot of oomph, and sounds semi-masculine even. This sounds like a ten year-old girl squealed it. Eww. The only other complaint I have is they changed the lyrics to be kid friendly. Can't blame them considering their target audience.
We Are Family - Sister Sledge (LINK)
Charlene: Ugh... too much pop.
Me: It's a 90's classic, and on my favorite childhood CD, so shut it. They really went all out on this one, I must say; I really enjoyed it. Disregarding Charlene's hatred of such peppy stuff...
RATING: 10/10
Me: One of their best, can't complain. Top notch.
I Gotta Feelin - Black Eyed Peas (LINK)
Charlene: Hip Hop trash.
Me: Not one of my favorite songs by any means, but at the same time I don't dislike it. The Chipmunks and Chipettes perform this one together, but not to as good a result as the previous team-up.
RATING: 7.5/10
Me: Lacked that special touch and some of the oomph you get from the Black Eyed Peas version. Nothing really special about it, just okay.
Party Rock Anthem - LMFAO (LINK)
Charlene: This is actually a fun one. I like it.
Me: I giggled when Simon said 'shake that'.
Charlene: Since XG is temporarily incapacitated, I'll take over. Considering what the song is in and of itself, this is a pretty good cover. Still not quite the same as the actual song, but one of their better covers. Still not as good as We Are Family, but pretty close.
RATING: 9/10
Me: Oh, uh... I liked it. What did I miss?
Charlene: Moving on...
Tubthumping - Chumbawamba
Charlene: Ugh... no link for a reason....
Me: Half-assed. Track from the video game, and they clearly put minimal effort into it. I can still hear the original singers' accents clearly. They did nail the pitch, though, which is more than I can say for a lot of amateur chipmunk videos.
RATING: 4.5/10
Me: Decent, just barely.
Dropping the links because it is time consuming, but these are all official versions from the video game.
I'll Be There For You - The Rembrandts
Charlene: Ooh, Friends! I love that show!
Me: A nostalgic song for sure, this one hits all the right notes.
RATING: 9/10
Me: I'd give it a 10 were it not for the fact that I think it could have been done better. Still, really good, though not as satisfying as the original.
All The Small Things - Blink 182
Charlene: FINALLY! My kind of genre!
Me: One of my favorite 'Munk covers, this one is a fun, rockin' style with quick-ish tempo. I love the original and this is just as fun to listen to. This is what you're looking for, Ross!
Rating: 10/10
Never Let You Go - Third Eye Blind
Charlene: You know, I'm seeing a pattern. You cling to the 90's too much.
Me: ...
Charlene: I've gone and done it now... anyway, the song is well done, though it doesn't have quiiite the same oomph. Still, I think it's one of XG's favorites... *waves hand in front of my face*
Me: *sigh* Here.
RATING: 8.5/10
Semi-Charmed Life - Third Eye Blind
Charlene: This song is infamous for being hard to look up.
Me: One of my 90's favorites, the chipmunks handle it fairly well. I would criticize for the half-assed sounding doot-doot-doot parts, but that's how the real song sounds high-pitched. So...
RATING: 8/10
Me: Still did not live up to expectations.
Yeah... kinda abandoned my strategy halfway through, but... hope you all enjoyed!
